Meeting Agendas and Notes

Agenda: Preliminary organization meeting, laying out major activities, and creating initial action list

Notes: Gracy, Real, and Benoit brainstorming potential data sources and people that should be involved in some way (as interviewees, focus group participants). The following people and organizations were mentioned:

  1. Directors and educators of graduate programs and CE programs
  2. Practitioners with responsibilities for AV material
  3. Vendors who also participate in education via hosting of interns or serving as instructors for grad/CE programs
  4. Associations that provide CE opportunities, including AMIA, SAA, ARSC, regional library/archive/museum associations (need list of these)
  5. Field service programs such NEDCC, Lyrasis, Amigos, CCAHA, which often provide CE F2F and webinar offerings
  6. Media archives that often employ graduates of LIS, moving image archiving, and other related graduate programs
  7. Archives that are not specifically focused on media, but which have media as part of larger collections

Gracy also suggested that we include media scholars/humanities specialists, as they may have particular insights for us, particularly in relation to how our educational programs could help with "archives in the classroom" and moving image/sound archives literacy. What types of media archives skills should digital humanists, media scholars, and even traditional history scholars have? Real mentioned Oliver Gaycken as a possible contact to help us here, as well as Travis Wagner from University of South Carolina.

It was mentioned that we will in essence be doing a type of snowball sampling, where initial contacts may lead to more contacts that we were previously unaware of. Goal: To create a directory of educational providers for both graduate education and continuing education, from which we can draw upon to collect additional data about content of course offerings and learning outcomes from these courses.

Another area that was in need of further exploration was how AV archiving could best be taught in community archiving settings, where participants are less likely to have access to the traditional grad/CE offerings. Ed Benoit is particularly interested in this area, and it was suggested that Lindsay Mattock may want to become involved as well.

Other sources of data that were brainstormed during the meeting:
  • Job announcements
    • Specifically for media archivists as well as those that may mention media but are not media-specific
    • Should be broken down by type of institution, job title, and job responsibilities
    • Possible sources of postings: AMIA-L, Code4Lib, USAJobs, SAA job list; others?
  • Surveys of archivists--to determine what archivists should know about AV materials going into entry-level archives positions and media-specific positions
  • Focus groups and interviews--could be used earlier to gather additional possible competencies or later to test a proposed competency framework
  • Literature review: combing the literature of LIS and archival studies to identify competencies (how far back should we go?)
  • Comparison with "digital" programs (preservation, curation, libraries), to see how they are dealing with AV material

Finally, it was suggested that we might have enough material to pursue a special issue of The Moving Image, The American Archivist, or Preservation, Digital Technology & Culture. Or, perhaps, an edited volume published by SAA.
